Lesson structure

Safety – A gun needs to be respected and handled with care and gun safety is paramount at all times. You’ll learn how to handle the gun correctly, both while shooting and when taking a break. By keeping to a few simple rules, you’ll be able to enjoy the session, ensuring that you and those around you will be safe. (Shooting has a very good safety record). We’ll also provide ear defenders for you and any guests, as well as safety glasses and peaked cap.

Hand Eye assessment – We’ll check for eye dominance, and find out whether you have a preference for one eye over the other – or whether using both works best. Your dominant eye will determine where you aim the gun, so it’s key for a successful shot. You’ll also develop your hand eye co-ordination for shooting, and build your confidence to trust your aim.

Gun Mount – You’ll learn to handle the gun, to mount it (put into the shoulder) efficiently and consistently. It’s also important to know how to load and empty the barrels, and how handle the gun safely between shots.

Aim – It’s key to know the best stance and direction for a successful shot. You’ll learn where to focus your gun and to set your feet, and how to move between shots (important for game shooting).

Techniques – You’ll have the opportunity to learn the techniques for different target presentations. There’s lots of different types of targets, including those that cross right to left, cross left to right, driven, loopers and rabbits (not real ones!). During the lesson you’ll learn about the different approaches to different targets, such as how to swing through, pull away and maintain lead.

Other techniques include dealing with ‘pairs on report’ – that’s when a second target is released when gun is fired at first target, ‘simultaneous pairs’ when both targets released together, and ‘following’ or ‘rafael’ when both targets are released from the same trap one after the other.

We can also help with sporting clays, skeet, trap and game shooting techniques.

Courses – After your initial lesson you may want to develop your skills more.  A course of lessons will help you build a good foundation from which to improve further.

On The Peg – Looking for accompaniment on the peg? Not a problem. We can accompany you on the peg for your first days if you wish.
